Full Biography

Megan Yip, a native of Portland, OR, engages globally as a performer and educator. She made her solo orchestral debut at age 14 with the Oregon Sinfonietta and continues to perform internationally and throughout the United States in major venues including Helsinki Music Center, Berwaldhallen Concert Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Jordan Hall, Kaufman Music Center, David Geffen Hall, and Hill Auditorium. Recent performances include concerts with Pacifica Quartet, members of the St. Louis Symphony, and James Ehnes in the new piece “They Have Just Arrived At This New Level” by James Howard.

She is Second Prize and Audience Prize winner at the 2023 Schadt String Competition. She is recognized for her solo and ensemble work, featured in Strad Magazine, including a Grammy nominated project with Yale Cellos, and is guest artist with Versoi Ensemble, a collective of American and Finnish artists who collaborate in chamber music as agents of cultural diplomacy. Chamber music performances include appearances at Yellow Barn (Vermont), Prussia Cove (England), Musique de Chambre à Giverny (France), and Thy Chamber Music (Denmark).

She has performed as principal cellist with CityMusic Cleveland Chamber Orchestra, Orchester der Freiburg Musikhochschule, Yale Philharmonia, New Haven Chamber Orchestra, and The Juilliard Orchestra. She frequently plays with Detroit Symphony Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, Ann Arbor Symphony, and Detroit Opera. In collaboration with the Duderstadt Video Studio at the University of Michigan, Megan released a recording of York Bowen’s Cello Sonata and continues to champion undervalued cello works through multiple recording projects.

A dedicated educator, Megan teaches undergraduates at University of Michigan and is on the cello faculty at Indiana Summer String Academy and Michigan Youth Performing Arts Pre-College Program. She previously taught undergraduates at Yale College and also served as cello faculty for New England Conservatory’s Summer Orchestral Institute. She has been invited to give masterclasses at The Juilliard School, Yale University, San Francisco Conservatory, University of Michigan, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and Elly Bašić School of Music in Zagreb, Croatia.

Megan is a Fulbright Scholar and conducted a grant in Freiburg, Germany studying the 12 Sacher pieces for solo cello. She holds advanced degrees from Yale School of Music and The Juilliard School, and her former teachers include Jean-Guihen Queyras, Richard Aaron, and Paul Watkins. She is completing her Doctor of Musical Arts as a candidate at the University of Michigan.
